The Women of Lusophony concert will take place this Saturday in Cape Verde’s capital city, featuring Fafá de Belém, Lura, and Cuca Roseta, the organizers announced today — one year after the format premiered in Lisbon.
“The governments of Cape Verde, Portugal, and Brazil, in partnership with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), invite everyone to attend the second edition of the concert,” stated the organizing committee for the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence — celebrated on July 5th but marked by events throughout the year — on its official page.
The event also celebrates World Portuguese Language Day (observed annually on May 5th) and “aims to strengthen the historical, cultural, and economic ties among CPLP member states, promoting dialogue, cooperation, and sustainable development within the Lusophone space,” with a view to “a future of shared prosperity,” the statement added.
The second edition of the concert will be held near Quebra Canela beach, in the city of Praia.
“The idea is to sing the voice of women in the Portuguese language,” said Fafá de Belém to Lusa one year ago, during the concert’s debut at Lisbon’s Belém Cultural Center, where she was joined on stage by seven other female singers, each from a different Lusophone country.
At that time, the Brazilian artist expressed the hope that the format would “cross the seas” to new stages.
The concert is one of the highlights dedicated to women in the May calendar of Cape Verde’s 50th independence anniversary celebrations.
The University of Cape Verde (UniCV) will host a film screening titled 50 Women Through Our Eyes on Wednesday, May 28, followed by a forum on Women and Development on Friday, May 30.
