Country Registers 31% Reduction in Power Outages and Interruptions Over the Last Decade

The Electricity Distribution Company of Cape Verde (EDEC) announced this Wednesday (30th) that over the last decade, it has reduced the number of power supply cuts by 31% and the average duration of interruptions by 35%.

According to Lusa, in 2015, each customer experienced an average of 35 supply failures, but by 2024, that number had dropped to 24 — a 31% decrease, the company explained in a statement.

Over the same period, the average time without electricity per customer fell from 61 hours to around 40 hours per year.

The most significant improvements occurred in the northern region of the country, where outages dropped from nearly 35 to 16 and the duration of failures from 50 to 24 hours — a 52% reduction.

In the southern region, although less pronounced, improvements were also noted: interruptions dropped from 35 to 30, and downtime decreased from 69 to 52 hours per customer.

The company attributes these results to the modernization of the power grid, reinforced maintenance efforts, better technical team organization, and investment in training and employee development.
